Dhigurah, whose name translates to ‘Long Island’, is a jewel of the South Ari Atoll and a dream destination for marine life enthusiasts. Stretching nearly 4 kilometers, the island is a lush paradise of tropical vegetation, fringed by pristine white sandy beaches that culminate in a spectacular, tapering sandbank. Dhigurah is globally renowned for one main reason: it is one of the few places on Earth where majestic Whale Sharks can be spotted year-round. This, combined with its proximity to world-class manta ray cleaning stations and vibrant thilas, makes it an unparalleled hub for underwater adventure.

Diving Information

Marine Life Highlights: The marine life around Dhigurah is legendary. It is the premier location in the Maldives for year-round Whale Shark encounters in the Maamigili Beyru Marine Protected Area. From January to May, Manta Rays are frequently seen at nearby cleaning stations. The surrounding thilas and reefs are bustling with life, including Hawksbill Turtles, Napoleon Wrasse, Eagle Rays, and large schools of reef fish. White-tip and Grey Reef Sharks are also common residents.

Best Season

Diving is fantastic all year. Dec-May (dry season) offers the calmest seas and best visibility. June-Nov (wet season) is peak time for Manta Ray sightings.

Currents

Currents can vary from gentle on the western lagoon side to moderate and strong in the channels, providing exciting drift dives. The dive centers are experts at choosing sites based on daily conditions.

Visibility

Typically excellent, ranging from 20 to 40 meters, with the best conditions during the dry season.

A consistent and warm 27°C to 29°C (80°F to 84°F) throughout the year.

House Reef: Dhigurah has an extensive house reef that runs along the length of the island. It's easily accessible from the beach and offers fantastic, easy snorkeling and diving. You can expect to see a wide variety of reef fish, moray eels, and often turtles and rays.

Whale Shark Safari

The signature excursion. Join a guided boat trip into the marine protected area for a chance to snorkel or dive alongside the largest fish in the sea. An ethical and unforgettable experience.

Explore nearby Manta Ray cleaning stations. Watch in awe as these gentle giants gracefully glide to have parasites removed by cleaner fish.

Sandbank Excursion

Walk to the stunning sandbank at the southern tip of the island. It connects to the neighboring LUX* resort at low tide. Perfect for incredible photos and a feeling of being at the edge of the world.

Sunset Dolphin Cruise

Take a traditional dhoni boat out in the late afternoon to watch pods of spinner dolphins playfully leaping from the water as the sun sets.

Bikini Beach: Dhigurah has a designated tourist bikini beach area where swimwear is appropriate. The main beach stretches for kilometers, offering plenty of space. The famous sandbank at the end is a highlight.

Dining Options: The island has several guesthouses with in-house restaurants that are open to the public, as well as a few local cafes. You can enjoy a mix of Maldivian, Asian, and international cuisine. Fresh seafood is always a great choice.

Culture & Etiquette: Respect for local culture is key. When not on the bikini beach, it is customary to dress modestly (covering shoulders and knees). As a local island, alcohol is not permitted. The community is friendly and welcoming to visitors who respect their traditions.

Travel & Logistics

How to Get There: The fastest way to reach Dhigurah is via a 20-minute domestic flight from Velana International Airport (MLE) to Maamigili Airport (VAM), followed by a 15-20 minute speedboat transfer to the island. Alternatively, a shared speedboat service runs from Malé, taking approximately 2 hours.

Island Infrastructure: Dhigurah has a health center for basic medical needs, a few convenience stores for snacks and supplies, and several souvenir shops. There is no ATM on the island, so it is advisable to bring sufficient cash (USD is widely accepted).

Comprehensive diving insurance that covers medical evacuation and hyperbaric treatment is mandatory for all divers. This will be verified by the dive center.
